Genres: Black Metal
Trippin' Hippie Records has taken what OG TengeT provided and put a gorgeous amount of work into it, giving it a wonderful cover, labeling, tray card, the whole nine yards.
The content of the CD itself is great. The songs themselves work as an album, not just a collection of songs tossed together. The sound is, for the most part, pure black metal, but you can hear so much more going on at the same time. You can hear the fact that OG wears his influences on his sleeve, and not just in the fact that some of his heroes listed in the Thank You's are sampled. But because you can almost hear Tool, Nirvana, and Nine Inch Nails as well as Darkthrone, Burzum, and some Gorogoroth.
The instrumetation of the music is well executed, and mixed perfectly. You can hear everything going on, despite the fact that some songs are busy with drums, bass, rhythm, lead, vocals, and samples happening AT THE SAME TIME. Nothing is muddied or muddled in the production.
OG's vocals themselves are a great centerpiece for the disc. The man has some kind of range, that's for sure.
Overall, I'm going to give this CD a 7 out of 10. I don't recommend it to people who have a shitty attention span, and I don't recommend it to people who have a shitty attitude to what makes black metal. If you've got an open mind and like to be challenged, listen to From the Ashes of Ruin. You won't be disappointed.
