Fivewilldie Interview

June 17, 2009

This interview was done, like many others I've done, through MySpace's internal email system. You'll notice that when I first started sending out these emails that I was sending the same damn thing to everyone, and all the questions are the same. I have since tried to do more personalized interviews, so that they are not all mechanical on my part. But please note, I have not edited this interview whatsoever. And now, to the interview with Bag 'o' Cans Barry and Howard from the Irish doom band Five Will Die!

Where are you from, and how has your location in the world affected the music you play?

Barry (Bass) - From Cork in Ireland. Its a lovely place! Corks unreal, it could be described as 'sexy', so that effects our music. Our music and Cork are very arousing and stimulating. I love Cork.

Howard (Guitar) – What he said. Ireland is an interesting place to live. Cynicism and sarcasm are a way of life, being in a Doom-esque band seems like a natural thing to do. Cork is the Peoples Republic though, it’s in our blood. Except for the Ogre, he’s from some sort of Well in Tipperary…

What is the metal scene in your area like? Are you one of many bands, or a strange artifact, a lonesome group with no similar peers?

Barry - The metal scene here is fairly big ,there’s loads of bands for such a small area. theres a langerload of trash bands goin round. We do our thing, the slow sludgy shit, so we stand out a bit from the other bands on the scene. We’re that bit sexier aswell, coz we take our clothes off a lot. Nudity goes along way these days.

Howard – The Cork scene is pretty healthy alright, some great bands. We’re stubborn cunts though, we do our own thing regardless of anyone else. That sets us apart from the more mundane groups in Cork, plus we tear the shit outta it live, all of the time, everytime. I like the idea of being a strange artifact, that sounds pretty cool! But no, we just try harder than most bands on the scene. And taking our clothes off does seem to help.

Who are the members of the band, and what do they play?

Andy (d’Ogre) = vox
Howard = guitar
Frank = guitar
Bag 'O' Cans Barry = bass
Alan = drums

What other bands are your main inspirations, and what are your inspirations outside of music? Also, what do you do outside of music? Are you painters, writers, chefs, etc.?

Barry - Lynyrd Skynyrd and Down…nothing else really inspires me, I work in a supermarket.

Howard – Cult of Luna, Sabbath, Electric Wizard, The Charles Manson thing is perversely inspiring, I keep dreaming about that Lynne Fromme chick stabbing me… I end up beating her with Mansons’ rigid corpse till she stops, then that Tex lad skins up with a newspaper covered in blood. Then I spit in his mouth, which makes him all upset. Songs like Black Cloud are direct results of dreams like that.

What is it that drew you to play the style of music you play, rather than another form?

Howard – Hetfield, I heard the crunch on Harvester of Sorrow and popped a semi… haven’t looked back since.
Barry - I dunno what the fuck im doin in a metal band, i should be in a funk band.
